Group Tour Itineraries

Here are a few suggested itineraries to get you thinking about your tour of the Redwood Coast!

Watchable Wildlife

(All-day) Begin your day at the Arcata Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary where you’ll find dozens of bird species and river otters. Take a step back in time at the HSU Natural History Museum, with its impressive fossil collection and live specimens. Continue north on Hwy 101 to the HSU Marine Lab and Aquarium in Trinidad, where you can touch the tidepool animals (please call 707-826-3689 for appt.). A beautiful drive north takes you to the Redwood National & State Parks. At Newton B. Drury Parkway stop to view the majestic Roosevelt Elk and take a walk through pristine old growth coastal redwood forests. Return to Eureka, and if time permits visit the Sequoia Park Zoo.

Loggers, Soldiers and Sailors

(5 hrs.) Spend the day in Eureka, starting at Fort Humboldt State Historic Park, where Ulysses S. Grant was once stationed, with its museum and exhibits of logging history. Next, the Blue Ox Millworks, followed by lunch at Samoa Cookhouse where you’ll also enjoy the museum and old time photos. Stop in at the Humboldt Bay Maritime Museum now located next to the Cookhouse. Then take a 75-minute narrated cruise on the Madaket. Visit Old Town for the Clarke Historical Museum. Take a guided tour of the magnificent Victorian architecture for which Eureka is world-famous, including the incredible Carson Mansion.

South of Eureka

(All-day) Take Hwy 101 south to the little dairy town of Loleta. Visit the Loleta Cheese Factory for a self guided tour. Watch cheese being made, then cross the river at Fernbridge to the Victorian village of Ferndale with its unique shops, houses and art galleries. Return to Hwy 101 or take Grizzly Bluff Rd. and visit the Scotia mill and parktake in self guided tours of the fish hatchery and musuem. Continue south to the Avenue of the Giants, a 33-mile scenic drive through towering redwoods, with many quaint shops and cafes along the way. Continue to sunny Garberville for lunch.
